Donovan Ferreira, Tabraiz Shamsi and Gerald Coetzee all claimed two wickets in an over as the Joburg Super Kings comfortably beat Durban’s Super Giants by 28 runs in their SA20 game at Kingsmead in Durban on Tuesday night.

Ferreira, a part-time offspinner, conceded only 15 runs in his four overs and claimed the scalps of Wiaan Mulder and Jason Smith in his first over.

Shamsi bowled Chris Woakes with a jaffa, pitching on leg and hitting off, before trapping his South African spin twin Kesh Maharaj leg before.

Meanwhile, Coetzee finally saw off player of the match Quinton de Kock and tailender Naveen ul-Haq in the 18th over as the home team were bowled out for 141 chasing the visitors’ total of 169 for seven.

And to rub it all in for the home crowd, there was the inimitable figure of 45-year-old Imran Tahir twice sprinting to the boundary’s edge to celebrate wicket-taking feats.

First he comprehensively bowled opener Brandon King with a googly, then he took a fine low catch diving to his right at point to get rid of Mulder who attempted a reverse-sweep.

Both occasions saw Tahir celebrate in typical style, a sight South African crowds have come to cherish over the years.

The Super Giants’ only bright moment saw De Kock and Heinrich Klaasen add 48 in 31 balls for the fifth wicket, a stand that was ended when Klaasen (29 in 17 balls), who had earlier struck paceman Matheesha Pathirana clean out of the ground into Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (formerly NMR Avenue) was strangled down the leg side off the Sri Lankan, falling to a good catch by gloveman Jonny Bairstow.

De Kock ended with the only half-century in the match, striking five fours and two sixes in a fine innings of 55 in 45 balls, but only three Super Giants’ batters reached double figures and the left-hander couldn’t get anyone to stay with him.

SPINNERS RESTRICT JSK

Earlier, in a match dominated by spin on a sticky pitch that didn’t always encourage fluent strokeplay, spinners Prenelan Subrayen and Maharaj grabbed two wickets each to help restrict the Super Kings to what seemed like a par-looking total of 169 for seven after they won the toss and chose to bat first.

The Super Kings never quite put together the big partnership that would have threatened the 200 mark with the best coming from Devon Conway and Leus du Plooy who combined to produce 57 off 40 balls for the second wicket after Faf du Plessis was out in the first over delivered by Subrayen, getting a leading edge to point as he attempted to play the ball to leg.

Du Plooy was the more dynamic of the two, striking two fours and two sixes in his 32-ball 38 before he was bowled by Subrayen attempting a reverse sweep.

Conway had gone just before him, cutting Maharaj to Woakes at short third man.

The spin twins performed well as a combo with Subrayen claiming 2-24 and Maharaj 2-28.

The third spinner for the Super Giants, Noor Ahmad, also bowled well and was a little unlucky not to get a wicket, conceding just 29 runs off his four overs.

Medium-pacer Chris Woakes varied his pace well, claiming 2-28 off his full quota of overs, claiming the key wickets of Bairstow, nonchalantly caught behind by De Kock, and Ferreira, caught in the deep.

All the top and middle-order got starts for the visitors but wickets fell regularly before any real momentum could be built.

However Ferreira (26) helped his team to flourish at the death while Coetzee finished the innings with aplomb, pulling Ul-Haq for consecutive sixes.
