World Cup winner Cheslin Kolbe starred for Toulon as they edged Montpellier in Top 14 action on the weekend.

The diminutive hot-stepper was all over the park for the French giants, racking up 108 running metres and crucially played a vital role in one of Toulon's two tries as they edged Montpellier 20-18.

Fellow Springbok Cobus Reinach was on the park for Montpellier earning a try assist while forgotten Bok centre Jan Serfontein also ran out.

Springbok No.8 Uzair Cassiem scored a try for Bayonne as they almost upset Toulouse. However, with the help of Bok Rynhardt Elstadt on the flank, Toulouse battled to a 21-16 win.

Lyon defeated reigning European champions La Rochelle - who had Bok flyer Raymond Rhule on the bench - 20-16 to move into third place on the Top 14 table.

In the French second division, Pro D2, out of favour Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies kicked 11 points off the tee for Agen as they went down 20-16 to Grenoble.

On the other side of the globe in Japan League One, two Springboks crossed the whitewash. Indomitable hooker Malcolm Marx scored his fifth try in six games to continue Kubota Spears' unbeaten run. The Spears were too good for Toyota Verblitz - who had Springbok fullback Willie le Roux on the bench - winning 44-34.

Bok lock JD Shickerling scored the opening try of the match as he and fellow Springbok Marcell Coetzee helped the Kobe Steelers defeat Mitsubishi Dynaboars 49-30.

Finally, Springbok utility forward Kwagga Smith led his Blue Revs charges to a convincing 34-14 victory over Kintetsu Liners.
