Scotland stuck it out and never gave up, earning two superb tries… but Ireland were magnificent and will surely leave New Zealand feeling somewhat uncertain ahead of their quarter final clash. TRY, IRELAND, SHEEHAN! 31-0; Incredible play from Ireland, spreading the ball to the right wing, then stretching to the right, with the one-man advantahe, a long pass to hooker Sheehan been gobbled up and the big man powering through a tackle for the try. Superb from the Irish once again.

Superb running and passing from the Irish, but for Scotland sadly there is very little to speak about from that first half. Surely this is all over now, Scotland are almost certainly out of the Rugby World Cup We have Ireland vs New Zealand and France vs South Africa to look forward to in the quarters… or can Scotland conjure up a miracle to haul the Irish back and hand them their names. All will be revealed in the following 40 minutes…

Ireland have made it to the quarter-finals of the Cup in seven of the previous nine Cups… but they have never made it through to the semi-final. Ireland are currently ranked as the number one nation in world rugby, while Scotland are ranked fifth, which is their highest-ever ranking.

For South African fans, the only calculated permutation for them to miss out on would be if Scotland win with a four-try bonus point, and Ireland pick up one (but only one) bonus point.
