Both sides have played in all 10 Rugby World Cups, including the current competition. Ireland have made it to the quarter-finals of the Cup in seven of the previous nine Cups… but they have never made it through to the semi-final. Scotland have also made it to the quarter-final seven times… but they HAVE made it through to the semi-final once. That was in 1991, but they lost the third-place playoff match.
Ireland are currently ranked as the number one nation in world rugby, while Scotland are ranked fifth, which is their highest-ever ranking.
For South African fans, the only calculated permutation for them to miss out on would be if Scotland win with a four-try bonus point, and Ireland pick up one (but only one) bonus point. So that's an unlikely situation from many perspectives. And both teams will be focussed on a passionate Home Nations barny!
Good evening and welcome to possibly the biggest match of the 2023 Rugby World Cup so far: it's Ireland vs Scotland and it's the decider to see who goes through to the quarter-final. Will it be Ireland, South Africa or Scotland? One thing you can be sure of… it's going to be one hell of a battle!
