FULL-TIME, AUSTRALIA 34-14 PORTUGAL! What a match! That had absolutely everything. Portugal attacked for all they were worth, had two tries denied… and had to deal with an incredibly resolute Australian defence. Australia attacked well at times but it was that defence that was just incredible. No big celebrations as they have left the door open to Fiji who just need a bonus point against Portugal to make the quarters, but Australia have done as much as they can and not they wait to see what Portugal can do against Fiji. It should be one hell of a match as well. Thanks for following the action with us and enjoy the sporting week ahead.
Australia with the ball running it at Portugal, not kicking for touch they want to end on a high… BUT PORTUGAL STEAL THE BALL and they are running at Australia, mauling then running… Pinto now breaks the line but it's intercepted by Australia… they run the ball, play breaks down, a knock-on… and the ref raises the whistle to his lips…
Australia push up but concede a penalty and Portugal clear the ball upfield and they will have the throw-in on the 22… brilliant, weaving run from Pinto until he is brought down. Portugal throwing everything at the Aussies.
Portugal trying to run from inside their half but there's a knock on, so unlucky for Portugal. The margins have been so close tonight.
The conversion attempt from up against the touchline is narrowly missed.
TRY, AUSTRALIA, KOROIBETE! 34-24Portugal give the ball away with a loose pass and Australia drive forward, first with a powerful run from Kerevi, and then as a ruck moves towards the left touchline the ball pops out and Koroibete crashes over for the try.
Australia lose the ball forward on the Portugal 10m and they will have the scrum.
CONVERSION, PORTUGAL, MARQUES! 29-14; No trouble from a couple of metres to the left of the posts. Is there a sniff here still…
TRY, PORTUGAL, SIMOES! 29-12; Great mauling and they pour over for the try.
Portugal scrum on the Aussie 5m… Australia penalised and Portugal have a free kick and will scrum again.
Portugal run left and right, powering hard at the Aussies, but they hold their line and hold their line incredibly, denying Portugal entry back into the match.
Australia feed the scrum on their 22 but Portugal claim it, run it… but lose it, and Australia kick the danger downfield.
An incredible storming run from Marta from his 10m line, being brought down only on the Aussie 22m. Brilliant play but Portugal need points and fast…
Australia feed the 7-man scrum on their 5m… Portugal MUST put points on the board with just 13 men against them…
YELLOW CARD, AUSTRALIA, KEREVI. The big man is binned for almost a forearm smash as he tried to burst through the Portugal line.
Faessler is the man yellow-carded for Australia.
Ref and TMO call it knock on and not a penalty try… and they have not made any friends in the stadium with that call…
Portugal drive over for a try, but the TMO wants to confirm… in the meantime the ref has yellow-carded an Aussie player, so Portugal will have a man advantage… but what about the try…?
Portugal drive forward and there's another penalty and the ref has warned Australia that a yellow card will follow.
Portugal drive forward and there's another penalty and the ref has warned Australia that a yellow card will follow.
Portugal drive forward and get the penalty on the 10m… but there was a shoulder challenge on Marques… TMO calls it on the chest but there is a full crowd here in Saint-Etienne watching the big screen who disagree vehemently.
Portugal driving forward near the halfway line but they lose the ball and Australia will feed the scrum.
Good running and driving by Portugal, but then the two teams exchange a couple of kicks, ending in an Aussie lineout.
Good running and driving by Portugal, but then the two teams exchange a couple of kicks, ending in an Aussie lineout.
Portugal can't control the throw and Australia grab it, Donaldson spiralling. kick upfield.
Portugal driving hard up at the Aussie 5m line, they eventually send a long ball out to the touchline but Marta can't stay infield… but the ref calls play back for a penalty, Portugal kicking into touch for the throw.
IT'S HIT THE POST! Donaldson tries to curl his conversion in from the right touchline, but it bangs against the right upright and back infield… two points gone a-begging, although it possibly won't be missed.
TRY, AUSTRALIA, MCREIGHT! 29-7; Australia run the ball right and Nawaqanitawase draws his man and release McReight who catches the ball and has a short burst and a dive over the line. Australia have done all they need to do gaining the bonus point… now they just need to see out the win and hope Fiji get beaten by this Portugal side.
Australia drive back at Portugal and make it into the Portugal half where they win a penalty on the 10m line, the kick going just past the Portugal 22 for an Australia throw.
Storti gets the ball and again he runs like a demon, sliding and slicing through Australian tackles before eventually being brought to ground.
A bruising start to the second half with both sides having a chance to attack and running into heavy tackles.
KICK-OFF! Were back underway here in Saint-Etienne, where 40 minutes is a long, long time…

HALF-TIME, AUSTRALIA 24-7 PORTUGAL. An incredibly tense first half of World Cup rugby, with Portugal showing signs of taking total control of the match… but going down to 10 men gave Australia the opening to burst ahead in the game. The Wallabies were ruthless and clinical for those 10 minutes and have given themselves a good lead and a great chance to sneak into the quarters, although Fiji still have the upper-hand. Portugal are looking incredibly exciting and dangerous… they have a lot of work to claw back but 40 minutes is a long time in Saint-Étienne… so it's gong to be fascinating to see how this match turns out over the next 40 minutes…
HALF-TIME, AUSTRALIA 24-7 PORTUGAL.
The kick gives Australia the throw-in about 10m short of the Portugal line… Australia run the line but some fierce Portuguese tackles cause Australia to lose the ball… and the ref blows for half-time. Phew! That was hectic!
… but Portugal are defending like a steel wall… but the ref blows them up for not rolling away on the 10m line.
Portugal with the throw but Australia claim the ball, it's kicked upfield, Portugal kick back and now the Wallabies are running the ball…
UNLUCKY! Portugal drive forward from inside their half, a clever chip forward causing Australia all sorts of trouble… Australia claim the ball but Portugal win it back, the ball spins down the line and Portugal storm down the left touchline and Martins puts in some huge strides but he is JUST dragged into touch as he dives forward to touch down… TMO has an easy decision, but the crowd groans its disapproval.
Portugal mauling superbly and driving play up into the Australian half, and now they're into the 22… but Australia get a penalty and clear from their 22 but only to the 10m line.
Australia kick into touch for a 5m lineout, they claim the throw but they are penalised for blocking in the loose maul. Portugal clear the kick to ease the pressure.
WHAT. RUN! Perese surges through the Portugal line from the halfway line and scythes his way through to about 10m short of the Portuguese tryline where he is brought down, and Australia press for all they are worth, passing out right then back to the left… and they win a penalty on the 5m line for offside.
Portugal straight away putting some pressure on Australia, but the Wallabies have belief now and aren't budging.
Portugal straight away putting some pressure on Australia, but the Wallabies have belief now and aren't budging.
CONVERSION, AUSTRALIA, DONALDSON! 24-7; At least Bettencourt is able to come back on now for Portugal to even things up… but has the damage been done?
TRY, AUSTRALIA, BELL! 22-7; Australia just crushing Portugal at the moment, the 14-men unable to hold them off, with Bell crashing over for the score.
CONVERSION, AUSTRALIA, DONALDSON! 17-7. Super kick from the left of the poles.
TRY, AUSTRALIA, PORECKI! 15-7; The Aussie skipper crashes over for a try almost straight from the deep kick off, Australia making massive advantage of having the extra man.
CONVERSION, AUSTRALIA, DONALDSON! 10-7. No problem from in front of poles.
TRY, AUSTRALIA, ARNOLD! 8-7; The penalty from almost in front of posts but near the 10m line just skews past the left upright… but Australia charge forward, regain possession and Arnold storms up near the 5m line and takes the pop up catch and crashes over the line to go back into the lead.
YELLOW CARD, PORTUGAL, BETTENCOURT. Disaster for Portugal as their scoring hero is spotted by the TMO making a shoulder tackle that connects with a Wallaby jaw. Let's hope it's not upgraded to red as that could ruin this tie.
CONVERSION, PORTUGAL, MARQUES! 3-7; A beautiful conversion slotted from the right touchline and the crowd roars their approval.
TRY, PORTUGAL, BETTENCOURT! 3-5; Quite astounding play from Portugal, scrumming on the Wallaby 5m line and they run the ball will pace and confidence, with a long pass out to the corner for Bettencourt to grab and he dives high and handsome to slide over fo the try! PORTUGAL ARE IN THE LEAD WITH A MAGNIFICENT TRY!
Frost needing some medical attention so the clock has stopped… he's on his feet now and back in the scrum, albeit looking slightly tender.
Frost needing some medical attention so the clock has stopped… he's on his feet now and back in the scrum, albeit looking slightly tender.
Portugal all over Australia, and now a chip just short of the Aussie tryline, it bounces up and Nawaqanitawase is forced to carry it over and then as he tries to clear he slips and slides over the dead ball line.
More lovely running from Portugal to the right Storti dipping and weaving trying to get through the Wallabies… now Portugal spread left and they are running at Australia as if this is the Tuesday practice session - magnificent running from the Iberians.
Portugal again running the ball superbly, they get pushed back close to their 22 but continue to run the ball and Australia are penalised. This side is by no means minnows, which many people were expecting ahead of this World Cup.
MAGNIFICENT! Portugal claim their lineout ball, run the line crisply and it's into the hands of Storti who bursts through a tackle and is on the charge until the Wallabies manage to tuck him into touch. Great play from Portugal. What a delight they have been this World Cup.
PENALTY, AUSTRALIA, DONALDSON! 3-0; No mistake from a few paces to the right of the poles.
Portugal feed the scrum inside their 22… the scrum collapses and Australia have a penalty in front of poles… and they are going for the points, and the whistles from the crowd don't sound terribly supportive.
Australia running well from the start, pushing up into the Portugal half, now the 22m… they break the line but the ref calls them back for a scrum.

A final plus for this match is the fact that Portugal have been playing some superb running rugby in the World Cup, and will hopefully ensure both matches are super-entertaining.
So we're in for a thrilling final two matches featuring Portugal, as the men from the Iberian Peninsula have the very remote chance of qualifying ahead of Australia and Fiji… but their biggest role is that of potentially knocking one of those two sides out of contention for the quarters.
Australia and Portugal have never met in a Test, but Portugal did play an Australia A side as a a World Cup warm-up match. They lost 30-17… but they were 14-12 ahead at half-time.
Australia and Portugal have never met in a Test, but Portugal did play an Australia A side as a a World Cup warm-up match. They lost 30-17… but they were 14-12 ahead at half-time.
… the irony is that Portugal still have a really outside chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals AHEAD of Australia and Fiji. However, Portugal HAVE to score four tries in both matches and must ALSO beat Fiji by MORE than seven points.
Portugal have never played against Australia, but have lost both matches they played against Fiji. In this World Cup, Portugal gave Wales a good game (losing 28-8) before drawing 18-18 with Georgia. The Georgia side made Australia (35-15) and Fiji (17-12) both work hard for their wins, so in terms of the form book Portugal is unlikely to be a walkover for either side. However…
Portugal have only played in one World Cup before, in 2007, when they went out in the pool stage after losing all four of their matches. The big unknown is how Portugal (ranked 16th in the world) will perform against Australia or Fiji in their last match.
Fiji play Portugal in their final pool match, and if Fiji win or lose by seven points or less then they will hit the quarter finals at the expense of Australia.
If Australia finish level with points with Fiji then the Fijians will go through to the quarters having win the pool match between the two sides.
Australia have never been knocked out in the pool stage, but they are in danger of missing out this year. They must beat Portugal and must also score four or more tries to get the bonus point that would put them one point ahead of Fiji.
Australia have played 53 matches, winning 42 and losing 11. Their points tally is 1611-754.
Australia won the World Cup in 1991 and 1999. They lost in the final in 2003 and 2015 and were knocked out in the semi-final twice. Their three other World Cups saw them knocked out in the quarter-final.
Australia are currently ranked 10th in the world and have appeared in all 9 previous World Cups.
Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of the Pool C clash between Australia and Portugal from Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Étienne.
