Kenya 7s receive Taabu boost
Kenyan Sevens coach Innocent Simiyu received a massive boost ahead of Dubai Sevens II on Friday after speedster Daniel Taabu was declared fit.
Taabu had a ankle injury and couldn’t take part in last weekend’s first tournament, and Simiyu will be looking for a more composed performance after the team ended eighth.
But his return means Kenya have a fully fit squad to choose from for the clash.
"Taabu picked up an ankle injury early in the tournament last week and that's why he missed the last five matches. He will play in Dubai Sevens II," Simiyu told The Nation.
The team has lost Levy Amunga, who has returned to Nairobi because of exams with Kelvin Wekesa coming in to replace him. Amunga played in all six games last weekend.
Wekesa, who is 21, and has been likened to former Kenya captain Andrew Amonde, could make his series debut this weekend. Amonde retired after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and has identified Wekesa as his natural successor.
Kenya’s results were up and down last weekend, beating Spain before going down to finalists USA 14-7. On day two they lost to Argentina, Great Britain and Ireland to finish eighth in the tournament.
