What has been going on in LaLiga this past week? Here are 10 of the top stories, from UD Las Palmas’ coaching change to Atlético de Madrid’s new stadium name.

It may currently be the October international break, but there were still several major LaLiga storylines this past week, the most important of which are outlined in further detail below.

DIEGO MARTINEZ IS THE NEW COACH OF UD LAS PALMAS

The first coaching change of the LaLiga EA Sports season has taken place, with UD Las Palmas deciding to move on from Luis Carrión and hiring Diego Martínez, the former coach of CA Osasuna, Granada CF, RCD Espanyol and Olympiacos.

ALLAN NYOM RETURNS TO GETAFE CF

Getafe CF made a signing last week, bringing in former player Allan Nyom. The right-back played 83 times for Los Azulones between 2019 and 2022, while he has also represented other Spanish sides Granada CF and CD Leganés. At the age of 36, Nyom adds experience and leadership to this Getafe CF squad.

ATLETICO DE MADRID'S STADIUM HAS A NEW NAME

Riyadh Air Metropolitano is the new name of Atlético de Madrid’s stadium. The Saudi Arabian airline became the club’s main sponsor in August of 2023 and has now reached a nine-year agreement for the naming rights of the stadium.

MARTIN ZUBIMENDI SCORES HIS FIRST GOAL FOR SPAIN

The October international break is currently taking place and several LaLiga EA Sports players were involved as Spain defeated Denmark 1-0 in the Nations League. It was Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi who scored the only goal of that game, his first goal for Spain.

VALENCIA CF DRAW AGAINST THE MEXICAN NATIONAL TEAM

During this break, Valencia CF organised a friendly match against the Mexican national team. The game, played in Mexico, finished 2-2, with Dani Gómez scoring both of the goals for the LaLiga EA Sports team.

REAL MADRID RENEW JOAN MARTINEZ

Joan Martínez has confirmed that he has signed a new contract with Real Madrid, extending his deal with the capital city club until 2026. The 17-year-old centre-back is currently out with injury, but has a bright future ahead and big things are expected of him.

RIYADH SEASON BECOMES THE OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF LALIGA

Riyadh Season have signed a partnership agreement with LaLiga, marking a three-season partnership. This partnership, which reflects Riyadh Season’s global presence, aims to organise promotional activities for both brands and implement joint initiatives targeting football fans and visitors to Riyadh Season.

THE FIRST ROUND OF THE COPA DEL REY IS SET

The draw for the first round of the 2024/25 Copa del Rey took place this past week. The 16 LaLiga EA Sports teams who aren’t involved in the Spanish Super Cup will be participating in this round, with the likes of Atlético de Madrid facing sixth-tier UE Vic and Real Sociedad taking on fifth-tier FC Jove Español.

ANDRES INIESTA IS RETIRING FROM FOOTBALL

A LaLiga EA Sports legend announced his retirement this past week. At the age of 40, Andrés Iniesta is hanging up his boots after an incredible career, in which he scored the winning goal of the 2010 Fifa World Cup final and in which he won nine LaLiga EA Sports titles with FC Barcelona.

REAL RACING CLUB STAY TOP OF LALIGA HYPERMOTION

Although there was no LaLiga EA Sports action this past week, there was a full round of LaLiga Hypermotion. The most notable result was Real Racing Club de Santander’s 1-0 victory over Levante UD, which keeps them top of the table. Meanwhile, Real Zaragoza have moved up to second place thanks to their 3-2 win away at CD Tenerife.
