The cancelled Vodacom Super Rugby match between the Emirates Lions and Toyota Cheetahs will not be replayed, but the teams will share points, a statement from SA Rugby said on Wednesday.

The game, which was called off by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases after six Lions players tested positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the game, and five more were placed into quarantine, was supposed to be moved to an available date.

But the fact that Super Rugby Unlocked ends in a few weeks’ time and there are no open weeks on the calendar, meant that – as per the competition rules – the points are shared by the two sides.

“The Vodacom Super Rugby Unlocked third round match between the Emirates Lions and the Toyota Cheetahs, which was called off in line with Covid-19 protocols, has been declared a draw, as a result of the inability to reschedule the match. Each team is awarded two points,” a short statement from SA Rugby said on Wednesday.

The Cheetahs remain unbeaten, and will face the Cell C Sharks this Friday in their next game.
