Cape Town City FC striker Jody Ah Shene is challenging himself to set a new 30-goal record in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) and clinch the Golden Boot Award.

As things stand, Orlando Pirates striker Boitumelo Radiopane holds the record having scored 25 goals during the 2021-22 season. Since that campaign, no player has scored over 20 goals in a season.

However, The Citizens striker, Ah Shene is optimistic about breaking Radiopane’s record and setting a new one of 30 goals.

In the previous campaign, which was his debut in the DDC, Ah Shene was in mesmerising form, scoring 16 goals in 18 appearances.

The 19-year-old was the league-leading goal scorer until towards the end of the campaign where he spent most time with the first team and was then dethroned by SuperSport United’s Thabang Mahlangu who scored a hat-trick on penultimate match of the season to clinch the gong.

This season he has already found the back of the net twice. At the first team level as well, he has contributed massively.

“There’s always room for improvement in this game, you cannot say that you’ve done well, and you are happy with staying at one place,” said the soft-spoken Ah Shene.

“So far this season I have been juggling first team and Diski Challenge and I have set myself a target of 30 goals in the Diski and five or more at the first team level.”

“I want to go for the record.”

Ah Shene's star has been rising each match, and he has also contributed positively at the national team level. He was part of the team that won the Cosafa Cup in Mozambique last month, helping SA qualify for the Junior Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in five years.

At the Cosafa he scored goals //to clinch the tournament top goal scorer gong.

His goal at the national team level is to finish in the top four at Afcon next year and qualify for the World Cup.

He added: “Cosafa is in the past now, we are focusing on what is next. It is always great to represent the national team, and I want to do it with distinction.”
