Alcaraz, Swiatek lead 2023 US Open entry lists

Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are headed back to Queens. The 2022 US Open men's and women's singles champions, and current world No 1s, sit on top the respective entry lists for the 2023 tournament.

With 25 participants, the US leads the US Open field in total players who've earned direct entry.

Fourteen American women and 11 men have qualified by ranking, and each field bosts two Americans ranked in the world's Top 10: No 4 Jessica Pegula and No 7 Coco Gauff, and No 9 Taylor Fritz and No 10 Frances Tiafoe.

A total of 14 players, nine men and five women, are entered on injury-protected rankings, including Americans Jennifer Brady and Reilly Opelka.

2021 Australian Open finalist Brady, who's playing her first tournament in nearly two full years this week in Granby, Canada, is expected to play her first major tournament since Roland Garros in 2021. Opelka, meanwhile, last played in Washington, D.C. 12 months ago.

Other notable players entered with a protected ranking include 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, sidelined since January; the man he beat to win that title, Kei Nishikori; and other former Top 10 players, Gael Monfils and Milos Raonic.

Former world No 4 Nishikori, who, like Brady, had been out since 2021, return to competition with aplomb in June by winning an ATP Challenger event in Puerto Rico.
