Outstanding win for Conor Benn

Conor Benn scored an outstanding victory over the more experienced Sebastian Formella, winning on points over 10 rounds to claim the WBA Continental welterweight title on Saturday night at the SSE Arena in London.

The 24-year-old Benn (17-0; 11), who is rated at No 15 by the WBA, was in control from the opening bell and punished Formella (22-2; 10) throughout to win by wide margins.

The scores were 100-91; 99-91 and 99-9-2.

On the undercard, heavyweight Fabio Wardley (10-0; 9) won on second-round knockout over Richard Lartey (14-4; 11). Time was 1:22.

In another heavyweight bout, Alen Babic (6-0; 6) knocked out Tom Little (10-9; 3) in the third round. The time was 2:38.

Lightweight Yves Ulysse Jr. (19-2; 10) won on a seventh-round knockout over Mathieu Germain (18-7-1; 8) to claim the NABF and WBC Francophone titles on Saturday night at the Hotel Rimouski in Rimouski, Quebec, Canada. Ulysse scored two knockdowns. Time was 2:46.

In a lightweight bout Steve Claggett (29-6-2; 19) won on a sixth-round stoppage over David Theroux 16-4; 11 for the NABA title.

JAVIER FORTUNA WINS IN SIX

Former WBA junior lightweight champion Javier Fortuna (36-2-1; 25) won on a sixth-round technical knockout over Antonio Lozada (40-5-1; 34) at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

Fortuna scored a knockdown in the first round before the referee stopped the fight after a barrage of punches, at 2 minutes 34 seconds into the sixth round.

FORMER WBC JUNIOR LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION WINS IN THREE

Former WBC junior lightweight champion Francisco Vargas (27-2-2; 19), now fighting at lightweight, won on a third-round knockout over Otto Gamez (19-4; 14) on Friday night in Ecatepec, Mexico.

Vargas sent Gamez down and out with a left uppercut at 1:08 into the third round.

FORMER CHAMPION TAVORIS CLOUND RETURNS AFTER SIX YEARS

Former IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (25-3; 20) returned to action after six years and won on a third-round knockout over Ryan Soft (4-12-1; 1) on Friday night at the Ocean Centre in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Cloud made a slow start but exploded to action in the third round with a barrage of punches before the fight was stopped at 1:29 into the round.

Junior featherweight Javon Campbell (3-1; 2) stopped Waverly Bagby (1-3; 1) at 1:15 into the first round.

In a lightweight bout Jeremy Hill (14-0; 9) won on a third-round technical knockout against Travis Castellon (16-4-1; 12). Castellon was down in the second and third rounds before the stoppage.

MELVIN LOPEZ WINS IN ONE ROUND

Bantamweight Melvin Lopez (24-1; 15) smashed Jesus Martinez (27-12; 13) to defeat in one round on Friday night at the Mediapro Studio in Miami, Florida.

Martinez was down on two occasions before the fight was stopped at the end of the round.

James “Bring Home the Bacon” (25-4; 17) knocked out Roque Agustin Junco (10-7-1; 6) in the second round of a welterweight contest. Time was 2:33.

Junior middleweight Mekhrubon Sanginov (8-0-1; 6) won a fourth-round knockout over Cleotis Pendarvis (21-6-2; 9). Pendarvis was down three times in the fourth round before the fight was stopped at 2:40 into the round.

PUERTO RICO’S WILFREDO MENDEZ TO DEFEND BELT

WBO mini flyweight champion Wilfredo Méndez (16-1; 6) from Puerto Rico is scheduled to make the third defence of his belt against Venezuelan Alexis Díaz (25-2; 17) at the Hotel Catalonia in Santo Domingo on 16 December.
