South Africa had reached 65 for two wickets in their first innings after earlier dismissing Bangladesh for 106 in just 40.1 overs on the first day of the first test in Mirpur on Monday.

In difficult conditions for batting, with the pitch providing plenty of assistance for seamers and spinners alike, South Africa should be well pleased with their position although they lost both skipper Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs in the afternoon session.

Markram was bowled by Bangladesh’s only pace bowler, Hasan Mahmud, with the last ball of the first over, playing back and inside the line of an inducking delivery.

Stubbs (23 off 27 balls, including 4x4s), as is his habit, was aggressive in his brief innings, striking his first two boundaries with reverse-sweeps. He drove two fours off the back foot off left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, but then misjudged the length of his next ball playing back to a fuller delivery that he edged to slip.

At the break, a solid-looking Tony de Zorzi (19 off 47 balls) and David Bedingham (nine off 16 balls) were at the crease for the visitors who trailed Bangladesh by 41 runs with eight wickets in hand.

Earlier, South Africa dismissed the last four Bangladesh batters for 46 runs in 14 overs after they had reduced the home team to 60 for six at lunch.

Dane Piedt made the first breakthrough in the afternoon when he bowled opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy for 30 with a delivery that slanted across him bowled from round the wicket. Joy, who consumed 97 balls in his innings, was Bangladesh’s rock in his team’s brief innings.

Thereafter, debutant Jaker Ali was smartly stumped by Kyle Verreynne off Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada picked up his third wicket when Nayeen Hasan edged to Wiaan Mulder in the slips while Maharaj bowled Taijul Islam to wrap up the innings.

Rabada, who took his 300th test wicket in the morning, finished with 3/26, Mulder took 3/22 and Maharaj 3/34. Piedt claimed the other wicket, finishing with 1/19.
