Fortuin ton puts Lions on top after day one

Bjorn Fortuin hit an unbeaten century as the DP World Lions were bowled out for 323 with the Six Gun Grill Western Province on 12 without loss at stumps on day one of the CSA 4-Day Franchise Series on Sunday.

Fortuin shared a 144-run partnership with Malusi Siboto as they put WP under pressure at the DP Wanderers.

Siboto was caught for 52 off 106 balls (hitting five fours and a six) off the bowling of Aviwe Mgijima.

Fortuin continued to lose partners as he scored an unbeaten 123 off 143 balls (hitting 20 fours) as his side was undone by Beuran Hendricks.

Hendricks, who surpassed 350 first-class wickets, ended with figures of 5-59 in his 14 overs.

After losing three quick wickets in the first hour off the bowling of Beuran Hendricks, an 83-run partnership between Dominic Hendricks and Mitch van Buuren saw the hosts fight back.

The duo put on the Western Province attack before Hendricks became Mihlali Mpongwana's first victim as he was caught for 44 off 109 balls (hitting seven fours).

Mpongwana then removed Connor Esterhuizen for a duck, and then Dane Paterson trapped Sisanda Magala lbw for five.

Mpongwana then got the settled Van Buuren, who scored 46 off 81 balls (hitting seven fours), before he slapped it straight to the fielder.

Earlier on, B Hendricks struck early as he got Jordan Hermann caught for one.

Reeza Hendricks didn't bother the scoreboard as he edged behind to Kyle Verreynne off the bowling of his surname's sake.

Hendricks joined the 350-wicket club as he now holds 350 first-class wickets, with the wicket of Kagiso Rapulana, who also got a nick behind for five.

SWANEPOEL FIVE-FOR SIDESHOW AFTER BATTING MASTER CLASS BY KNIGHTS

Gihahn Cloete fell short of a century as the ITEC Knights were bowled out for 422 at the close of play on day one of the CSA 4-Day Franchise Series against the Databet Warriors at St George's Park.

Cloete hit 93 off 133 balls (hitting 15 fours) before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Beyers Swanepoel.

Swanepoel starred with the ball as he took five for 82 as the Warriors were punished in Gqeberha.

Earlier on, a 105-run partnership between Patrick Kruger and Pite van Biljon helped keep the Knights in a strong position at an early start.

Van Biljon fell two runs short of a half-century as Swanepoel bowled him for 48 off 71 balls (including eight fours).

Kruger top-scored with a superb 81 off 135 balls (hitting 15 fours) before he was trapped lbw by Glenton Stuurman.

Another 78-run stand between Patrick Botha and Cloete formed before Botha was caught behind off the bowling of Akhona Mnyaka for 30.

Cloete remains unbeaten on 63 as he looks to take the Knights to a competitive total.

Earlier on, the Knights got off to the worst start after batting first as Swanepoel struck early in the second over as he dismissed opener Isaac Dikgale for one.

Unfortunately, Raynard Van Tonder was run out after attempting to dive at the danger end on 27 but was thrown out by a direct throw.

The play was suspended at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead as bad light continued to plague activity between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and Momentum Multiply Titans.
