DAY 1: Masterful Moore keeps Western Province in the game
Eddie Moore scored a brilliant century as he spearheaded the fightback for WSB Western Province in the post-lunch session of day one of their CSA 4-Day Series match against the Dafabet Warriors at WSB Newlands on Thursday.
Western Province were on 183-5 at tea.
Western Province won the toss, elected to bat first and suffered a calamitous collapse in the first session.
However, Moore (107*) joined hands with George Linde (60*) as they revived the innings.
Moore faced 171 deliveries to reach his 18th first-class century.
The opener was dropped on the second delivery of the day. He hadn't scored a run at the time.
The left-hander made the Warriors pay for giving him another chance by playing a chanceless innings from that point onwards.
Moore shared the crease with five batters in the first 15 overs of the match.
Valentine Kitime was the fifth partner he shared the crease with before the arrival of Linde.
Linde proved to be the partner he needed beside him for the arduous job of digging Western Province out of the hole they found themselves in.
The pair shared an unbroken 150-run sixth-wicket partnership that catapulted the hosts back into the contest.
Like Moore, Linde was dropped early in his innings.
He was on 34 when a Warriors fielder failed to hold on to a catch to dismiss him.
Also like Moore, the all-rounder made good use of that second chance by registering an 18th first-class half-century. Linde faced 85 balls to reach the milestone.
Duanne Olivier was the pick of the bowlers for the Warriors with two wickets for 24 runs in 13 overs.
He bagged both wickets in the morning session.
Beyers Swanepoel, who also took morning wickets, also bagged a brace but conceded 25 runs in 11 overs.
