AmaZulu coach Sboniso Vilakazi has downplayed his side’s title ambitions this season despite enjoying a good run of form.

Usuthu have won four of their last five matches in the DStv Diski Challenge, and that has seen them moving to the No 1 spot on the log with one point ahead of Cape Town City FC, who have been leading the league for the past nine weeks.

This coming Sunday, AmaZulu could extend the gap between them and City as the two sides meet in the top-of-the-table clash at Malta Park Sports Ground in Cape Town.

Kick-off is at 10am CAT.

“I still don’t think we are challenging as yet. We are just trying to get as many points as we can. But after all winning the league is not really in our minds but when an opportunity of doing so presents itself we will do it. We just focused on improving from last season and finish in the top eight. That small improvement will show that we are learning and growing as a team,” Vilakazi explained.

Vilakazi added that finishing the second round leading the log would be good for them.

“It will be encouraging for the players to end the year sitting at the top. But we are taking each game as it comes and we have objectives. We are expecting a tough game against Cape Town City. They have done exceptionally well compared to last season.”

With the good run they are currently having, Vilakazi also warned his players not to get big-headed.

“Coming to the second round we will have to improve the players mental aspect. Make sure they remain humble. Because if we get carried away we will find ourselves missing our target which is to finish in the top eight.”

On the other side, The Citizens are heading to this match under pressure as they have not won in their last three outings. Following an impressive start winning six games in a row, things turned for City as they first lost 4-1 against Royal AM.

That was followed by two draws against Golden Arrows and SuperSport United. Last week they did not play. Their match against Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium was postponed.
