St George, Mekelakeya win, ignite title race
The Ethiopia Premier League title race is on, and St George has early contenders as Mekelakeya beat Wolkite 2-0 to go back to the top despite St George's 3-0 win over Hawassa.
An Abel Yalew hattrick was the tonic as St George returned to winning ways after losing to Bahir Dar City.
Abel Yalew scored as early as the 6th minute to give St George a 1-0 lead.
He will complete his brace in the 34th minute and go on to convert a 43rd minute penalty for his hattrick.
The teams will go into the halftime break with St George 3-0 Hawassa, a lead they kept till the end of the game despite Hawassa fightback.
Their title rivals, Mekelakeya defeated a resurgent Wolkite 2-0 and seem to enjoy a new goal outlet in Nigerian Striker, Chijioke Nnamdi who scored a stoppage time goal for his second goal in as many weeks.
The win takes Mekelakeya up to first position with 19 points, with Ethiopia Nigd Bank otherwise known as Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, CBE in second place with 17 points.
St George are in third place with 16 points and a game in hand after their Sheger Derby clash with Ethiopia Coffee was postponed indefinitely last week.
Hawassa are in midtable 8th position and Wolkite in 11th despite their losses but lots of week 8 fixtures still to play.
