Spurs fail to make ground as MFC leaders drop points
Cape Town Spurs failed to capitalise on points dropped by Casric Stars and Polokwane City in the Motsepe Foundation Championship this weekend as the Urban Warriors suffered a shock defeat at home.
Over in Cape Town, Shaun Barlett and company welcomed Pretoria Callies to Athlone Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Log leaders Spurs struggled to get going in the tie as Callies took the lead midway through the first half, courtesy of an effort from Oshwin Appolis.
Second-half substitute Keorapetse Sebone then doubled Callies' advantage soon after break, as Spurs were left with a mountain to climb.
While Therlo Moosa pulled one back for Spurs in the 65th minute, Callies held on to secure a 2-1 away victory against the Mother City outfit.
Spurs remained on 47 points while Casric Stars levelled the Urban Warriors’ points tally following their frustrating 1-1 stalemate against bottom of the log Black Leopards.
Even more frustratingly for Spurs, fellow PSL promotion contenders Polokwane City suffered a dramatic 3-2 loss against Venda Football Academy on Sunday afternoon.
With the score tied at 2-2 deep into the encounter, Tatenda Tavengwa then popped up in the 92nd minute to give Venda the crucial lead and, more importantly, maximum points.
Following the defeat, Rise and Shine dropped to the third spot on the log, one point behind Spurs and Casric Stars.
