MENTAL STRENGTH: Gumede on overcoming 14-month injury

Kaizer Chiefs defender Siyabonga Gumede says mental strength and determination to win were key in helping him overcome long-term injury.
Gumede last played a football match in January 2024 against Cape Town Spurs in a game where he suffered what was said to be a career-threatening (broken leg) injury.
The young prospect returned to the field this past weekend after 14 months of absence in style, scoring Amakhosi's second goal when they defeated Marumo Gallants 3-0 in the DStv Diski Challenge.
"It feels good, and I am excited to be back," said the soft-spoken lad after the match.
"I will work hard, continue to pour my heart and soul into the game I love. Thanks to all my family, friends, teammates and everyone who supported me during the difficult times while I was out injured. I look forward to doing what I enjoy most in front of you for many years to come."
During the time out, Gumede said it was not easy and he had to be strong mentally, not for himself but for a greater purpose.
"Yoh ngjabule kakhulu (I'm very happy) the coaches shown belief in me and I appreciate that. During the period I was injured I had to be strong mentally and work hard on my return. You know injuries like this can be the end of a career especially if you are not mentally strong," he added.
Chiefs are currently at the top of the log with 45 points, they are chasing their first-ever Diski Challenge title. Gumede wants to make major contributions in the team's remaining nine games in the DDC this season as he believes that will bring him closer to the first team as he was also training with the senior team before getting injured.
"I just want to continue where they teams is, good performance and try to maintain the position we are in until the end of the season. And remember that we are here to make our families proud. We just have to keep positive mindset and fight for the badge, also remember that we are here for our families we need to make them proud."
