THE COURSE

The Royal Montreal Golf Club (French: Le Club de Golf Royal Montréal) is the oldest golf club in North America, and the oldest in continuous existence, celebrating 150 years in 2023. It was founded in Montreal by eight men in 1873. Permission was granted by Queen Victoria to use the prefix "Royal" in 1884

The club's first course was a 9-hole layout on Fletcher's Field in Mount Royal Park, which the red-coated golfers shared with the public on the then outskirts of Montreal. Mr. Alexander Dennistoun, a Scottish born man, is known as the first Club's Captain.

Royal Montreal hosted the Presidents Cup in 2007 and the Canadian Open in July 2014..

FORMAT

The global team competition is a four-day, match-play event with 30 total matches, comprised of a 12-person US Team and a 12-person International Team.

The team that earns the most points after four days of competition wins the Presidents Cup.

Daily Schedule

Thursday: Five matches total, four-ball (best ball) or foursomes (alternate shot)

Friday: Five matches total, foursomes or fourball (the opposite of Thursday’s format)

Saturday: Eight matches total, four-ball, and foursomes split the morning and afternoon

Sunday: Twelve matches total, singles

What is match play?

Match play is a form of play where a player (or players) plays directly against an opponent (or opponents) in a head-to-head match. You win a hole by completing it in the fewest number of strokes, and you win a match when you are winning by more holes than remain to be played. You (or your opponent) may concede a stroke, a hole, or even the match to each other. If your next stroke has been conceded, you are permitted to putt out, unless this will help your partner (for example, by showing them the line for their putt).

How do foursomes differ from four-ball?

Foursomes (also known as alternate shot) is a form of play involving partners (in either match play or stroke play) where two partners compete as a side by playing one ball in alternating order on each hole. Four-ball is a form of play (in either match play or stroke play) involving partners where two partners compete together as a side, with each player playing his or her own ball, and a side’s score for a hole is the lower score of the two partners on that hole.

Singles

In singles, each match features one player from each team. The player with the lower score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, the hole is halved.
