Tinkler questions finishing quality in squad

Cape Town city coach Eric Tinkler admitted he was concerned about the depth of quality of his squad after a myriad of missed chances in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Lamontville Golden Arrows.

The stalemate in the DStv Premiership did lift City one place up to sixth in the standings but it marked a 10th match in a row without a win for Tinkler’s side

“I think it was 19 shots for us to one (for them). That's how football games are won but unfortunately the per centages of the chances created, turned into goals is poor,” he said.

“So it begs the question ‘is the quality good enough?’ Because making chances is not the problem. And as much as people might turn around and say, ‘well their defence wasn’t good’, but 19 chances versus one your averages have to be higher and our averages haven’t been. That's the way I assess it,” added the City coach.

“I don't think I can fault anyone for effort. I don't think we played poorly. But we’re just not turning those chances into goals. And that quality has to be better, that's all I can say right now.”

'LACK OF QUALITY'

Tinkler said City consistently worked on solving the problem but are still not finding any joy.

“It's been the focus since the beginning of the season and an issue that we have tried to resolve. In a training week of five days, three are spent on final third entries. So, I don't think it's a lack of work. Maybe it's just a lack of quality.”

Tinkler said were already assessing options for next season

“As much as we're still fighting to ensure that we finish in the top eight at the end of the season, at the same time we are assessing ourselves. If there's one area of our game that is letting us down, is that final third.

“And now we have to find ways to improve on that area. Because I don't think the system is the problem. I don't think the defence is the problem,” he added.
