Kagiso Rabada struck twice in his second over as the Proteas put Bangladesh under huge pressure on the second afternoon of the first test at Mirpur on Tueday.

Bangladesh stumbled into tea on 19 for two in seven overs, still 183 in arrears, after Kyle Verreynne had struck an outstanding century, his second in tests, to give his team a first-innings lead of 202.

Verreynne was the last man out in South Africa’s first innings of 308 in 88.4 overs, after the visitors had bowled out Bangladesh for 106 in just 40.1 overs on the first day.

The South African wicketkeeper-batsman struck 8x4s and 2x6s in his 114 in a brisk 144 balls. He had already shared a key 119-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Wiaan Mulder, but salt was then rubbed into Bangladesh’s wounds when Dane Piedt (32 in 87 balls) helped him add a further 66 in 130 balls for the ninth wicket.

Verreynne reached his 100 with the shot he had perfected during his innings, the conventional sweep which had brought him a third of his runs.

With the pressure off, Verreynne swept and pulled Nayeem Hasan and Taijul Islam for sixes before being stumped to end the innings.

Bangladesh had seven overs to face before tea, and Rabada ensured they were unpleasant ones. In his second over, a double-wicket maiden, he had Shadman Islam smartly caught bat-pad at short leg by Tony de Zorzi and then Mominul Haque was unable to get on top of a sharply rising delivery that he directed low to Wiaan Mulder at third slip.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy (11*) and his captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto (5*) just about saw Bangladesh through to the break.
