Kaizer Chiefs concluded the DStv Premiership with a 2-0 loss at bottom placed Cape Town Spurs on Saturday, leaving the club outside the top eight and condemned to their worst ever finish with coach Cavin Johnson’s future in doubt.

Chiefs ended the season in 10th place – their lowest ever finish in more than a half century of professional football in South Africa. Their previous low was ninth.

“We have finished the season off on a very, very low note,” said Johnson.

“So yeah. Not a good day for Kaizer Chiefs. As the game went by, we were not capable of making more than five passes to dominate the game. And that killed the rhythm of the game as well,” he added after defeat to the already relegated Spurs.

Johnson described himself as “heartsore” after the loss and after a spell in charge of the club that saw him finish with a record of six wins in 22 games, losing eight and drawing eight.

“All I can I say, as a coach, I’m very, very heartsore. But for the future, I'm going to have to see. But right now, I’m not, not, not, not happy.”

Johnson took over when Molefi Ntseki was sacked in October, moving over from his position as head of youth at the club. But whether he now stays on at Chiefs remains to be seen.

He had already previously said he did not know if he would be considered for the fulltime coach’s job with the rumour mill continuing to link several candidates to the job at Naturena from next season.

“When I took over, we were where we were now. Maybe a little bit better. But we improved and we had a momentum going,” Johnson insisted.

“ And then somewhere along the line we slipped. And every time we get into better position, we didn't make it to the next level. And that was concerning for me. We tried our utmost best. If you remember, there was a time if I won the game, we would have gone second (in the standings), but we didn't. So, there are moments that we have to go back and we have to analyse correctly and see how it went.”
