St George officially crowned Ethiopia Premier League champions
St George played out a 1-1 draw with Dire Dawa City in the last game of the season to complete what has been incredible back-to-back titles over the last two seasons.
It was a day of celebration at the Adama Science and Technology University Stadium on Saturday as the team was formally crowned champions of the BetKing Ethiopia Premier League 2022/23 season.
Dire Dawa laid out an impressive guard of honour for the champion, and rightly so, but once the whistle sounded for kick-off, they were determined to get something out of the game.
Indeed, Dire Dawa drew first blood on the half hour mark with a goal scored by Binyam Getachew and they led 1-0 into the break.
St George came back strongly in the second half and they were rewarded with a Bereket Wolde equaliser on 58 minutes.
They thus finished the season with 64 points, four points more than Bahir Dar who finished second with 60 points.
Dire Dawa City, who started the day in the 10th position, earned a valuable point to finish level on points with Mekelakeya, but their negative goals difference of -5 to the +2 marker for the Defence Force meant they closed the season in 10th place.
St George were presented with their trophy at the end of proceedings in a colourful presentation ceremony.
St George are the record champions of Ethiopia with 31 top-flight titles in all, with 16 of them achieved in the Premier League era.
