Leopards make unwanted history in Diski Challenge
Black Leopards are on the verge of making a rare and unwanted history in the Multichoice Diski Challenge.
Since it was incepted in 2014, there has never been a team that finished a campaign without registering a win. However, by the look of things, that rare incident could occur as Venda based outfit Leopards are yet to win a game in 23 outings.
This has been a frustrating first experience for coach Mongezi Bobe and his charges.
With seven remaining games this season Leopards will be hoping to salvage the situation and prevent the team from going into history book with such bad record.
They will remain hopeful that their day of getting the first win before the season ends will come as they slogan says Lidoda Duvha (The Day Will Come)
In 23 outings the Venda based outfit have gathered seven points from seven draws and suffered 16 defeats.
They are among the four teams (Leopards, Chippa United, Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United) that have conceded more than 50 goals in the league.
The worse part for Lidoda Duvha is that they are even struggling to find the back of the net as they have scored only 19 goals.
In the history of Multichoice Diski Challenge, Baroka FC were the first team to play more than 10 games without a win.
During the 2015-16 season, Baroka played 11 games without a win. However, with four games remaining (as the league was still 15 games then) Bakgaga ba Mphahlele managed to turn around things and recorded a win before the curtain goes down.
In the First Diski Challenge campaign, the league was played in a round-robin format and knockout stages.
From the second season until last campaign, the Diski Challenge was played in a league format which saw the team playing 15 matches every year.
In all those years no team finished a season without a win.
But with the newly revamped 2019-20 season which sees the teams playing 30 matches for the first time, looks to have a rare and unwanted record where a team will go 30 games without a win.
In their remaining games, Leopards will play Baroka in a Limpopo derby this coming weekend, Stellenbosch FC who are also in their first season in the Diski Challenge.
They also have the likes of Cape Town City, title contenders Bidvest Wits, Polokwane City, Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs.
