Sundowns advance to Diski Shield semis

Mamelodi Sundowns knocked out Orlando Pirates in the quarterfinals of the DStv Diski Shield Cup competition.

The Tshwane youngsters came to this match as underdogs following their dismal displays in the past season. However, their determination saw them emerging victorious as they edged out Pirates 2-1.

The first half of the match produced no goals despite both teams creating numerous scoring opportunities.

It was an interesting half with both teams showing competitiveness.

The two sides went to the break tied on 0-0. In the second half, Cassius Mailula was the star of the show scoring two goals that put Sundowns in the driving seat.

Pirates tried to fight back but they could not break Sundowns defence until the last minutes of the match when the two times Diski Shield runners-up were caught napping and scored an own goal for Pirates.

Sundowns joined Chippa United in the last four of the tournament. The Chilli Boys got better of TS Galaxy in the opening fixture of the match beating them 1-0 thanks to captain Aviwe Mqokozo’s solitary strike in the first half of the match.

The two teams are now waiting for their opponents from Sunday matches where SuperSport United will face league reigning champions Stellenbosch FC, while Kaizer Chiefs host Maritzburg United in the other match.

The semifinals draw will be conducted on Sunday afternoonafter the last quarterfinal match.
