The DStv Diski Challenge League title race looks poised to be the most exciting for years.

This weekend will mark matchday 20, and the top three teams (Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC) on the log are in the race. They are locked together in a battle that could go all the way to the wire on 11 May.

Pirates, who are currently at the top with 41 points, the same as second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns are desperate to win the title for their mentor as it eluded them on the final day in the past two campaigns.

The Buccaneers are hoping for third time lucky however, there’s a huge possibility of them losing it in the critical stages again this season as they have proved that they struggle when it is time to deal with pressure. They are also not consistent at times.

Pirates coach Joseph Makhanya believes it is still early days.

But Themba Badela’s Sundowns are also on the run, and they can break The Buccaneers faithful hearts this season. They picked up a vital three points against Pirates a fortnight ago to keep the momentum and are on a seven-match unbeaten run.

Sundowns seem to be more consistent than Pirates who have not gone more than five games without a defeat.

Coach Badela who is enjoying his first season in the DDC is not interested in talking about the race as yet as he admitted: “It has not been easy, but we are focusing on one match at a time.

“We would have liked to win more matches, but we have to fight for three points. I am proud of the team from matchday one to now.”

Evangelos Vellios Stellenbosch FC, chastened by their collapse which saw them failing to defend the title last season, are back on their feet. They are doing everything they can as well, they are two points behind the leaders.

Coach Vellios echoed the same sentiments as Pirates mentor, saying it is still early, and tables are still going to turn.

"We are not going to get carried away. The league will still turn around a lot, we just need to keep on pushing to get many points as we can," said Vellios.

Kaizer Chiefs, who are currently in fourth place, had to introduce several new players to their team late last year. However, they are still very much in contention for the title and should not be underestimated. Cape Town City, Sekhukhune, and reigning champions SuperSport United are also still in the race mathematically.
