Cape Town City officially unveiled new DR Congo defender Nathan Fasika on Friday, whose expected arrival from FC Saint Eloi Lupopo has now been confirmed.

The centre-back has been signed as a replacement for Greek defender Giannis Potouridis, who left at the end of the 2020-21 season.

The 22-year-old is part of a rebuild at the squad under new coach Eric Tinkler, particularly in the defensive and goalkeeper positions, with City having already signed glovemen Darren Keet and Bongani Mpandle, and young right-back Patrick Fisher.

City shipped 40 goals last season, the second highest in the DStv Premiership behind bottom club Black Leopards (47). They managed to get into the top eight by virtue of the fact that they scored 42 goals, second only to champions Mamelodi Sundowns (49).

Tinkler will be looking for a greater balance between attack and defence, and Fasika will give him options at centre-back along with the likes of Taariq Fielies, Keanu Cupido and Abbubaker Mobara.

Fasika is a DR Congo international who played for his country at the African Nations Championship finals earlier this year. He was also involved in the 1-0 friendly loss to Tunisia last month.

He will be the fourth foreigner on the club’s books after Mozambique defender Edmilson Dove, Nigerian attacking midfielder Abdul Ajagun and Zambian forward Justin Shonga.
