Soweto Super United to feature in 33rd Phyllis Games

The 33rd edition of the Phyllis games was launched on Wednesday 13 December in Tembisa.

The tournament was established in 1992 by Philly Mathebula and has always brought the Ekurhuleni township to a standstill in the festive season.

The 24-team tournament is a knockout from start to finish, with 30 live games on TV.

The tournament is known as a group for finding talented youngsters as scouts and club owners flock to the games hoping they will find the next superstar.

The games have an average attendance of more than 10 000 spectators a day. This year’s edition kicks off on 20 December, with the final on 2 January 2024.

The games have prize money of R200 000 and will be played at five different venues across the township.

The first round of the tournament will be played from the 20th till the 22nd at Ema Seven in Ivory Park, with a home and away leg for all teams.

The last 16 games of the tournament will move to the Etafuleni ground on the 23rd and 24th. The quarterfinals will be in Phomolong from the 27th till the 29th.

The semifinals will be played at Esqogweni ground on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with the final happening on the second of January 2024 at the Mehlareng stadium.

This year's tournament will have crowd favourites Mambas FC turn out again. One Lion, the defending champions from last year, will look to continue where they left. This year popular Soweto team Soweto Super United will also be playing in the tournament.
