Kenya international Jesse Were scored a hat-trick as Zesco United continued their rampant start to the new Zambian Super League season with a 4-1 thumping of Lusaka Dynamos at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Wednesday.

It turned out to be an all-Kenyan affair as Harambee Stars midfielder Anthony Akumu added a fourth for Zesco, and compatriot David Owino netted an own goal to give some consolation to Dynamos.

The victory means Zesco have opened a four-point lead at the top of the league table as second-placed Red Arrows were surprise 3-0 losers on the road at Nkana.

It was a first loss of the campaign for Arrows as Kelvin Mubanga, Harun Shakava and Ronald Kampamba netted in the comprehensive victory for Nkana, who move up to fourth place in the table.

Danny Silavwe netted the only goal early on as NAPSA Stars claimed a 1-0 win over Buildcon to stay in third place, though they are seven points behind leaders Zesco.

Power Dynamos were also 1-0 winners as a second-half goal from Fredrick Mulambia gave them three precious points at Forrest Rangers, though they remain in the relegation zone.

In other matches played on Wednesday, Lumwana Radiants claimed a 3-1 victory at Kabwe Warriors, Green Buffaloes won 2-1 at KYSA and Nkwazi and Mufulira Wanderers played to a 0-0 draw.

The matches involving Zambia’s two CAF club competition competitors have been postponed as they prepare for continental action this weekend.

Zanaco versus Nakambala Leopards will now be played on 27 November and Green Eagles versus Kansanshi Dynamos is to be staged on 11 December.
